CAPIACross-Border Air Pollution Impact Assessment

'CAPIA' PROJECT DISCUSSIONS

Selection photochemical transport model

A choice needs to be made on which regional-scale photochemical transport model should be used in the CAPIA project. The main objectives of the modelling component are to:

  • Estimate the ambient concentrations of primary and secondry pollutants and their deposition rates in Botwsana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, presented in regional-scale maps.
  • To apportion the above in each country to the country of source, i.e. estimation of cross-border air pollution. This output is input to the economic modelling in the CAPIA project.
  • To modelled ambient ozone concentrations and deposition rates to the CAPIA agricultural impacts team in a format/scale that is approriate to their assessment methodologies.
  • Two appropriate models have been identified, namely CAMx and MATCH. An initial assessment of the two models has been conducted. CAMx-vs-MATCH summarises the features of each model that are relevant to CAPIA.

To guide the ultimate choice of the model to be used, a table of STRENGTH_WEAKNESSES compares the advantages and short comings of the two models.

The two models will be discussed at Siavonga. However, I'd welcome any prior discussion via email at MARK ZUNCKEL .
